Kai lived on the third floor of an apartment building. Every Tuesday, muddy footprints covered the back stairs. The prints started at the back door. They stopped right at the mail room.
काई एक अपार्टमेंट बिल्डिंग की तीसरी मंज़िल पर रहता था। हर मंगलवार पिछली सीढ़ियों पर कीचड़ भरे पैरों के निशान फैले होते थे। निशान पिछले दरवाज़े से शुरू होते थे। वे ठीक मेलरूम के पास जाकर ख़त्म हो जाते थे।
Kai first thought a neighbor made the mess. He asked around, but no one knew. The mystery bothered him every single week.
काई ने पहले सोचा कि यह गंदगी किसी पड़ोसी ने की होगी। उसने इधर-उधर पूछा, पर किसी को पता नहीं था। यह रहस्य उसे हर हफ़्ते परेशान करता था।
One rainy Tuesday, Kai got up early. He sat near the back door with his coffee. At seven o'clock, someone opened the door.
एक बरसाती मंगलवार को काई जल्दी उठ गया। वह अपनी कॉफ़ी लेकर पिछले दरवाज़े के पास बैठ गया। सात बजे किसी ने दरवाज़ा खोला।
A mail carrier walked in with a big bag. Rain dripped from her yellow raincoat. Her boots left wet, muddy prints on the floor.
एक डाकिया बड़ा-सा थैला लेकर अंदर आई। उसके पीले रेनकोट से बारिश का पानी टपक रहा था। उसके बूटों ने फ़र्श पर गीले, कीचड़ भरे निशान छोड़ दिए।
"Good morning," Kai said with a smile.
"सुप्रभात," काई ने मुस्कुराकर कहा।
"Good morning," the mail carrier said. "Sorry about the mud."
"सुप्रभात," डाकिया ने कहा। "कीचड़ के लिए माफ़ कीजिए।"
"This door saves time on rainy days," she said. "The front entrance is far around the building."
"बरसात के दिनों में यह दरवाज़ा समय बचाता है," उसने कहा। "सामने का प्रवेश द्वार बिल्डिंग के घूमकर दूर पड़ता है।"
"That makes sense," Kai said. "I was just curious."
"यह तो समझ में आता है," काई ने कहा। "मुझे बस जिज्ञासा थी।"
"I always try to wipe my boots," she said. "But the front mat sits too far away."
"मैं हमेशा बूट पोंछने की कोशिश करती हूँ," उसने कहा। "पर सामने वाला मैट बहुत दूर है।"
Kai had an idea right away. "What about a mat right here?" he asked.

The mail carrier smiled and nodded. "That would help a lot," she said.
डाकिया मुस्कुराई और सिर हिलाया। "इससे बहुत मदद मिलेगी," उसने कहा।
Kai bought a thick mat that same day. He put it next to the back door.
काई ने उसी दिन एक मोटा मैट ख़रीद लिया। उसने उसे पिछले दरवाज़े के बग़ल में रख दिया।
The next Tuesday, Kai checked the stairs. The floor was clean and dry. A few small, damp marks sat on the mat.
अगले मंगलवार काई ने सीढ़ियाँ देखीं। फ़र्श साफ़ और सूखा था। मैट पर कुछ छोटे, नम निशान थे।
Kai smiled and picked up his coffee. The stairs stayed clean every Tuesday after that.
काई मुस्कुराया और उसने अपनी कॉफ़ी उठा ली। उसके बाद हर मंगलवार सीढ़ियाँ साफ़ रहीं।
