The Same Stray Cat

Ruby has noticed the same gray cat all over her neighborhood lately. She sees it outside the bakery in the morning. Then it appears near the school gate at lunchtime. Later that evening, it's curled up on a bench by the park. It seems impossible for one cat to be in so many places in a single day.

रूबी ने हाल ही में अपने मोहल्ले में हर जगह एक ही स्लेटी बिल्ली देखी है। सुबह वह उसे बेकरी के बाहर दिखती है। फिर दोपहर के खाने के समय वह स्कूल के गेट के पास नज़र आती है। बाद में शाम को वह पार्क की एक बेंच पर गोल होकर बैठी होती है। यह नामुमकिन लगता है कि एक ही बिल्ली एक दिन में इतनी जगहों पर हो।

"Maybe it's a ghost cat," her friend Theo jokes when she tells him about it. "Or maybe you're just noticing it more because you're looking for it now."

"शायद यह भूत बिल्ली हो," उसका दोस्त थियो मज़ाक करता है जब रूबी उसे इसके बारे में बताती है। "या शायद तुम्हें वह इसलिए ज़्यादा दिख रही है क्योंकि अब तुम उसे ढूँढ़ती रहती हो।"

Ruby isn't so sure. She starts keeping track of the times and places on her phone. It feels like a joke at first, but the pattern genuinely bothers her. After a week, she has noticed something interesting. The cat by the bakery always has a small white patch on its left ear. The one near the park doesn't.

रूबी को इतना यकीन नहीं है। वह अपने फ़ोन में समय और जगहें नोट करने लगती है। शुरू में यह मज़ाक जैसा लगता है, पर यह पैटर्न सचमुच उसे परेशान करता है। एक हफ़्ते बाद उसने कुछ दिलचस्प देखा है। बेकरी वाली बिल्ली के बाएँ कान पर हमेशा एक छोटा-सा सफ़ेद धब्बा होता है। पार्क के पास वाली के कान पर नहीं होता।

She brings her notes to Theo, who has always been better at solving puzzles than she is. He looks closely at her photos and laughs. "Ruby, these aren't the same cat. Look, this one's tail is shorter, and this one is wearing a collar."

वह अपने नोट्स थियो के पास ले जाती है, जो पहेलियाँ सुलझाने में हमेशा उससे बेहतर रहा है। वह उसकी तस्वीरें ध्यान से देखता है और हँस पड़ता है। "रूबी, ये एक ही बिल्ली नहीं हैं। देखो, इसकी पूँछ छोटी है, और इसने पट्टा पहना हुआ है।"

At first Ruby feels a little silly for not noticing sooner. But then she realizes the real story might be even better than one well-traveled cat. There are at least three cats living around the same few streets. None of the neighbors seem to know about the others.

पहले रूबी को थोड़ी बेवकूफ़ी महसूस होती है कि उसने यह पहले क्यों नहीं देखा। पर फिर उसे समझ आता है कि असली कहानी एक घूमती-फिरती बिल्ली से भी बेहतर हो सकती है। इन्हीं कुछ गलियों के आसपास कम से कम तीन बिल्लियाँ रहती हैं। पड़ोसियों में से किसी को बाकी बिल्लियों के बारे में पता नहीं लगता।

Over the next few days, Ruby and Theo make a simple map. It shows where each cat likes to spend its time. They give the cats nicknames: Patch, Shorty, and Collar. They start leaving small bowls of water near each spot.

अगले कुछ दिनों में रूबी और थियो एक सीधा-सादा नक्शा बनाते हैं। उसमें दिखता है कि हर बिल्ली कहाँ वक़्त बिताना पसंद करती है। वे बिल्लियों को उपनाम देते हैं: पैच, शॉर्टी और कॉलर। वे हर ठिकाने के पास पानी के छोटे कटोरे रखने लगते हैं।

By the end of the month, half the neighborhood has learned the names too. Someone has even put up a little sign asking people not to feed the cats too much food. Ruby still smiles every time she spots one of the three cats. Now she's sure exactly which is which.

महीने के आखिर तक आधा मोहल्ला भी ये नाम सीख चुका है। किसी ने तो एक छोटा-सा बोर्ड भी लगा दिया है जिसमें लोगों से कहा गया है कि बिल्लियों को ज़्यादा खाना न खिलाएँ। रूबी अब भी तीनों में से किसी बिल्ली को देखकर हर बार मुस्कुराती है। अब उसे पक्का पता है कि कौन-सी कौन है।
