The Mislabeled Boxes

Miriam and Julian had spent the whole weekend packing their apartment. By Sunday night, forty boxes stood in neat rows by the door. Each one was marked with a black marker: kitchen, bedroom, office, bathroom.

मरियम और जूलियन ने पूरा सप्ताहांत अपना अपार्टमेंट पैक करने में बिताया था। रविवार रात तक दरवाज़े के पास चालीस डिब्बे क़तार में सजे खड़े थे। हर एक पर काले मार्कर से लिखा था: रसोई, बेडरूम, ऑफ़िस, बाथरूम।

The movers arrived early Monday morning, and everything went smoothly, or so it seemed. Boxes were carried out quickly. Within two hours, the truck was loaded and on its way to the new house.

मूवर्स सोमवार सुबह जल्दी आ गए, और सब कुछ आसानी से हो गया, या कम से कम ऐसा लगा। डिब्बे तेज़ी से बाहर ले जाए गए। दो घंटे के अंदर ट्रक लद गया और नए घर की ओर चल पड़ा।

That evening, tired but hopeful, Miriam opened the box labeled "kitchen" first. Instead of plates and pans, she found a tangle of phone chargers. There was also an old alarm clock and a drawer full of pens. "Julian," she called, "this isn't the kitchen box."

उस शाम, थकी हुई लेकिन उम्मीद से भरी मरियम ने सबसे पहले "रसोई" लिखा डिब्बा खोला। प्लेटों और कड़ाहियों की जगह उसमें फ़ोन चार्जरों का उलझा हुआ गुच्छा निकला। एक पुरानी अलार्म घड़ी भी थी और पेनों से भरी एक दराज़। "जूलियन," उसने आवाज़ दी, "यह रसोई वाला डिब्बा नहीं है।"

Julian came over, confused. He opened the box marked "office" and found towels and a shower curtain inside. "This is the bathroom stuff," he said, frowning. "I think we mixed up the labels while we were packing."

जूलियन उलझन में पास आया। उसने "ऑफ़िस" लिखा डिब्बा खोला तो उसमें तौलिए और शॉवर का पर्दा निकले। "यह तो बाथरूम का सामान है," उसने भौंहें सिकोड़कर कहा। "मुझे लगता है पैकिंग के दौरान हमने लेबल आपस में मिला दिए।"

They opened three more boxes, and the pattern continued. The labels didn't match the contents at all. Someone, in the rush of the weekend, had clearly written the wrong word on several boxes.

उन्होंने तीन और डिब्बे खोले, और वही सिलसिला जारी रहा। लेबल सामान से बिलकुल मेल नहीं खाते थे। सप्ताहांत की भागदौड़ में किसी ने कई डिब्बों पर ग़लत शब्द लिख दिया था, यह साफ़ था।

"Okay, we need a system," Miriam said, pulling out a notepad. "Let's open every box, check what's inside, and relabel it properly."

"ठीक है, हमें कोई तरीक़ा बनाना होगा," मरियम ने एक नोटपैड निकालते हुए कहा। "चलो हर डिब्बा खोलते हैं, देखते हैं उसमें क्या है, और उस पर सही लेबल लगाते हैं।"

It took them nearly two hours. Julian opened each box and called out the contents. Miriam crossed out the old label and wrote a new one that actually matched. Some boxes held a strange mix of items from two or three rooms at once.

इसमें उन्हें लगभग दो घंटे लगे। जूलियन हर डिब्बा खोलता और सामान बोलकर बताता। मरियम पुराना लेबल काट देती और नया लिख देती जो सचमुच मेल खाता हो। कुछ डिब्बों में एक साथ दो-तीन कमरों की चीज़ों का अजीब-सा मिश्रण था।

"How did we even manage this?" Julian asked, laughing as he found a single shoe inside a box labeled "books."

"हमसे यह हुआ कैसे?" जूलियन ने हँसते हुए पूछा, जब उसे "किताबें" लिखे डिब्बे में अकेला एक जूता मिला।

"We were exhausted and packing at midnight," Miriam reminded him. "I'm honestly impressed we labeled anything correctly."

"हम थके हुए थे और आधी रात को पैकिंग कर रहे थे," मरियम ने उसे याद दिलाया। "सच कहूँ तो मैं हैरान हूँ कि हमने कुछ भी सही लेबल किया।"

By the time they finished, every box had a new, accurate label. A rough map of the new house was taped to the fridge. It showed which room each box belonged in.

जब तक वे ख़त्म हुए, हर डिब्बे पर एक नया, सही लेबल लग चुका था। नए घर का एक मोटा-सा नक़्शा फ़्रिज पर चिपका दिया गया था। उसमें दिखाया गया था कि कौन-सा डिब्बा किस कमरे में जाना है।

"There," Miriam said, taping the last label shut. "Now let's actually unpack the kitchen box that has real dishes in it."

"लो," मरियम ने आख़िरी लेबल चिपकाते हुए कहा। "अब चलो रसोई वाला वह डिब्बा खोलें जिसमें सचमुच बर्तन हैं।"
