The day was very hot. Vito sat on the step outside his house. His little sister sat next to him. They wanted ice cream. Vito had five coins in his hand.
उस दिन बहुत गर्मी थी। वीटो अपने घर के बाहर सीढ़ी पर बैठा था। उसकी छोटी बहन उसके पास बैठी थी। उन्हें आइसक्रीम चाहिए थी। वीटो के हाथ में पाँच सिक्के थे।
Then he heard a song. It was the ice cream truck! He jumped up. "Stay here," he told his sister.
तभी उसे एक गाना सुनाई दिया। वह आइसक्रीम वाला ट्रक था! वह उछलकर खड़ा हो गया। "यहीं रुकना," उसने अपनी बहन से कहा।
The truck came down the street. Vito waved both arms. The driver did not see him. The truck went past his house and did not stop.
ट्रक सड़क पर आ रहा था। वीटो ने दोनों हाथ हिलाए। ड्राइवर ने उसे नहीं देखा। ट्रक उसके घर के सामने से निकल गया और रुका नहीं।
Vito ran after it. His legs were fast, but the truck was faster. He ran past the bakery and the school. His face was red and wet.
वीटो उसके पीछे दौड़ा। उसके पैर तेज़ थे, लेकिन ट्रक और तेज़ था। वह बेकरी और स्कूल के पास से दौड़ता हुआ गया। उसका चेहरा लाल और पसीने से गीला था।
The truck turned left at the corner. Vito turned left too. He saw it by the park gate. It stopped there. A line of children waited.
ट्रक कोने पर बाएँ मुड़ गया। वीटो भी बाएँ मुड़ा। उसे ट्रक पार्क के गेट के पास दिखा। वह वहाँ रुका हुआ था। बच्चों की एक कतार इंतज़ार कर रही थी।
Vito came to the end of the line. He could not talk. He just held out his coins.
वीटो कतार के आख़िर में पहुँचा। वह बोल नहीं पा रहा था। उसने बस अपने सिक्के आगे बढ़ा दिए।
The driver looked at him and laughed. "Did you run all the way?" he asked.
ड्राइवर ने उसे देखा और हँस पड़ा। "क्या तुम पूरा रास्ता दौड़कर आए?" उसने पूछा।
"Yes," Vito said. "One cone, please. My sister is at home. She is hot too."
"हाँ," वीटो ने कहा। "एक कोन दीजिए, प्लीज़। मेरी बहन घर पर है। उसे भी गर्मी लग रही है।"
The driver gave him two cones. "This one is free," he said. "Take it to her."
ड्राइवर ने उसे दो कोन दिए। "यह वाला मुफ़्त है," उसने कहा। "इसे उसके लिए ले जाओ।"
Vito ran home. Both cones were a little soft when he got there.
वीटो दौड़कर घर गया। जब तक वह पहुँचा, दोनों कोन थोड़े पिघल चुके थे।
