The Dropped Birthday Cake

Anika baked a chocolate cake for Chidi's birthday picnic. She decorated it with fresh strawberries on top. It looked perfect sitting on the kitchen counter.

अनिका ने चीदी के जन्मदिन के पिकनिक के लिए एक चॉकलेट केक बनाया। उसने ऊपर से ताज़ी स्ट्रॉबेरी से उसे सजाया। रसोई के काउंटर पर रखा वह केक एकदम बढ़िया लग रहा था।

She carried the cake carefully to her car. One shoe slipped on the wet driveway. The cake slid right off the plate.

वह केक को सँभालकर अपनी कार तक ले गई। गीली ड्राइववे पर उसका एक जूता फिसल गया। केक प्लेट से सीधा नीचे गिर गया।

Anika stared at the mess on the ground. Strawberries rolled in every direction. She checked the time and felt her stomach drop.

अनिका ज़मीन पर पड़े बिखरे केक को देखती रह गई। स्ट्रॉबेरी चारों तरफ़ लुढ़क गईं। उसने समय देखा और उसका दिल बैठ गया।

The picnic started in twenty minutes. There was no time to bake another cake. She needed a fast plan.

पिकनिक बीस मिनट में शुरू होने वाला था। दूसरा केक बनाने का समय नहीं था। उसे जल्दी से कोई तरकीब सोचनी थी।

She grabbed her car keys. She drove to the bakery on Main Street. The shop had one tray of cupcakes left. She bought all twelve right away.

उसने कार की चाबियाँ उठाईं। वह मेन स्ट्रीट की बेकरी तक गई। दुकान में कपकेक की बस एक ट्रे बची थी। उसने तुरंत सारे बारह ख़रीद लिए।

Anika arrived at the park a few minutes late. Chidi waved from the picnic blanket. "Where's the famous cake?" he asked with a grin.

अनिका पार्क में कुछ मिनट देर से पहुँची। चीदी ने पिकनिक की चादर से हाथ हिलाया। "वह मशहूर केक कहाँ है?" उसने मुस्कुराकर पूछा।

"There was a small accident," Anika admitted. She held up the cupcake box. "These are the backup plan."

"एक छोटा-सा हादसा हो गया," अनिका ने मानते हुए कहा। उसने कपकेक का डिब्बा ऊपर उठाया। "यह हमारा दूसरा इंतज़ाम है।"

Chidi opened the box and laughed. "Twelve cupcakes for six people," he said. "This is a great birthday."

चीदी ने डिब्बा खोला और हँस पड़ा। "छह लोगों के लिए बारह कपकेक," उसने कहा। "यह तो बहुत शानदार जन्मदिन है।"

Everyone grabbed two cupcakes each. They sat down on the grass. Anika told the story of the sliding cake. The whole group laughed a lot.

सबने दो-दो कपकेक उठा लिए। वे घास पर बैठ गए। अनिका ने फिसलते केक की कहानी सुनाई। पूरा समूह ख़ूब हँसा।

The next year, Anika baked two cakes just in case. Chidi laughed at her new backup plan. Nothing fell this time.

अगले साल अनिका ने कहीं कुछ हो न जाए, इसलिए दो केक बनाए। चीदी उसके नए इंतज़ाम पर हँसा। इस बार कुछ नहीं गिरा।
