Three Umbrellas, One Stand

Noa works at a small café downtown. An umbrella stand sits by the front door. It always holds exactly three umbrellas.

Noa trabaja en un pequeño café del centro. Un paragüero está junto a la puerta principal. Siempre tiene exactamente tres paraguas.

On rainy days, many customers borrow one. They walk out with a dry umbrella. Noa expects the stand to look empty by night.

En los días de lluvia, muchos clientes toman uno prestado. Se van con un paraguas seco. Noa espera que el paragüero quede vacío por la noche.

But it never does. By closing time, three umbrellas always stand there.

Pero eso nunca pasa. A la hora de cerrar, siempre hay tres paraguas ahí.

Noa asks her coworker Brice about it. "Do we hide extra umbrellas somewhere?" she asks.

Noa le pregunta a su compañero Brice sobre esto. «¿Escondemos paraguas de repuesto en algún lado?», pregunta.

Brice shakes his head. "Not that I know." "Maybe it is just good luck," he says.

Noa does not believe in luck like that. She decides to watch the stand all day.

A man borrows an umbrella at noon. An hour later, a woman returns a different one. A teenager takes one, then brings back two.

Un hombre toma un paraguas prestado al mediodía. Una hora después, una mujer devuelve uno distinto. Un adolescente toma uno y después trae dos de vuelta.

Noa watches this pattern all afternoon. People borrow, and people return, again and again. The stand always settles back to three.

Noa observa este patrón toda la tarde. La gente toma prestado, y la gente devuelve, una y otra vez. El paragüero siempre vuelve a tener tres.

"I understand it now," Noa tells Brice. "Our regulars share umbrellas like a small library. They just keep the system fair."

«Ya lo entiendo», le dice Noa a Brice. «Nuestros clientes habituales comparten los paraguas como una pequeña biblioteca. Solo mantienen el sistema justo».

Brice laughs. "There is no mystery at all."

Brice se ríe. «No hay ningún misterio».

"There is a nice one," Noa says with a smile. "Our customers take care of each other."

«Hay uno bonito», dice Noa con una sonrisa. «Nuestros clientes se cuidan entre ellos».

That evening, Noa counts the umbrellas once more. Three umbrellas stand by the door, as always.
