Portada de The Missing Recipe Card

Four days before the town's autumn festival baking contest, Maren couldn't find the recipe card for her grandmother's spice cake. She had used it every year for the contest and never once written it down anywhere else. It always lived in the same tin box behind the register. Now the box was there, but the card wasn't.

Her first suspicion landed, uncomfortably, on a baker from the next town over. He had entered the contest the last three years and had always finished second to Maren. He had been in the shop just that week, chatting longer than usual near the counter while Maren was busy with customers. If she confronted him directly and he turned out to be innocent, the accusation alone would damage a friendly rivalry that had lasted a decade.

She had two options, really. She could call him and ask outright, risking an ugly scene if she had misjudged him completely. Or she could wait a day and check quietly around her own shop first, only escalating if nothing turned up. Although the first option would have settled her nerves faster, she chose to wait. She couldn't shake the feeling that she was missing something obvious.

The next morning, her employee Noor mentioned something entirely by accident. She had been sorting through a box of old recipe cards donated to the town's charity cookbook. It was a fundraiser Maren had agreed to weeks earlier and had completely forgotten about. Noor had gathered cards from the tin, the drawer, and a stack of loose papers by the register. She was trying to be helpful, without checking which ones Maren actually meant to give away.

They found the spice cake recipe within minutes. It was sitting in a folder at the community center, along with a dozen other donated recipes. That was exactly where Noor had left it, in good faith.

Maren felt a wave of relief, followed quickly by guilt. She had come close to calling a man she genuinely liked and accusing him of something he had never done. She thanked Noor, retrieved the card, and made a private note to herself. From now on, she would always double-check a drawer before assuming the worst about a person.
