The Chalk Marks on the Driveway

Every morning, Xiomara found new chalk marks on the shared driveway. Numbers and letters covered the gray stone. They disappeared by the next afternoon.

Cada mañana, Xiomara encontraba nuevas marcas de tiza en la entrada compartida para autos. Números y letras cubrían la piedra gris. Desaparecían para la tarde siguiente.

At first, she thought the rain washed them away. But some mornings were dry, and the marks still vanished.

Al principio, pensó que la lluvia las borraba. Pero algunas mañanas eran secas, y las marcas igual desaparecían.

One Saturday, Xiomara decided to check early, before school. She walked outside at seven. A small boy sat on the driveway with a box of chalk.

Un sábado, Xiomara decidió revisar temprano, antes de la escuela. Salió a las siete. Un niño pequeño estaba sentado en la entrada con una caja de tizas.

"Good morning," she said. "Are you the person with all these chalk numbers?"

«Buenos días», dijo ella. «¿Eres tú quien hace todos estos números de tiza?»

The boy looked up, a little shy. "I'm Rio," he said. "I practice my numbers before school. My mom washes the driveway every afternoon."

El niño levantó la vista, un poco tímido. «Soy Rio», dijo. «Practico mis números antes de la escuela. Mi mamá lava la entrada todas las tardes».

"That explains it," Xiomara said. She sat down next to him. "Can I see your numbers?"

«Eso lo explica», dijo Xiomara. Se sentó junto a él. «¿Puedo ver tus números?»

Rio showed her rows of numbers, from one to twenty. They looked a little crooked but clear.

Rio le mostró filas de números, del uno al veinte. Se veían un poco torcidos pero claros.

"These are good," Xiomara said. "Do you want help with the next ten?"

«Están muy bien», dijo Xiomara. «¿Quieres ayuda con los siguientes diez?»

Rio nodded and handed her a piece of chalk. They sat together and wrote numbers all the way to fifty.

The next morning, new marks covered the driveway again. Numbers from one to fifty looked neat and proud.

Xiomara smiled when she saw them on her way to school.
