The Canceled Reservation

Miguel arrived at the restaurant fifteen minutes early, proud of himself for once for not running late. He gave his name at the host stand, expecting the usual nod toward a table. Instead, the host frowned and scrolled through a screen for a long, uncomfortable moment.

Miguel llegó al restaurante quince minutos antes, orgulloso de sí mismo por no llegar tarde, por una vez. Dio su nombre en el mostrador de recepción, esperando el asentimiento de siempre hacia una mesa. En cambio, la anfitriona frunció el ceño y se puso a desplazarse por una pantalla durante un momento largo e incómodo.

"I'm not seeing a reservation under that name," Camila said. "Could it be under someone else's?"

«No veo ninguna reservación con ese nombre», dijo Camila. «¿Podría estar a nombre de otra persona?».

It wasn't. Miguel had booked the table himself, three weeks earlier, for his parents' anniversary dinner. He checked his phone and found the confirmation email, complete with a time and a reservation number. He showed it to Camila, who studied it carefully.

No lo estaba. Miguel había reservado la mesa él mismo, tres semanas antes, para la cena de aniversario de sus padres. Revisó su celular y encontró el correo de confirmación, completo con una hora y un número de reservación. Se lo mostró a Camila, quien lo estudió con atención.

"This is strange," she said. "It looks like our system dropped a batch of bookings during an update on Tuesday. I'm sorry, this must have been one of them."

«Esto es extraño», dijo ella. «Parece que nuestro sistema perdió un grupo de reservaciones durante una actualización el martes. Lo siento, esta debe haber sido una de ellas».

Miguel's parents were due to arrive in ten minutes, and the restaurant, predictably, looked completely full. He felt a flash of frustration, then made himself breathe and think instead of react. Getting upset wouldn't put a table back on the floor.

Los padres de Miguel llegarían en diez minutos, y el restaurante, como era de esperar, se veía completamente lleno. Sintió un destello de frustración, y luego se obligó a respirar y a pensar en vez de reaccionar. Molestarse no iba a hacer aparecer una mesa en el salón.

"Is there anything you can do?" he asked, keeping his voice even. "It doesn't have to be the same table, just something."

Camila disappeared into the back for a few minutes. When she returned, she explained that a four-top by the window had a reservation for eight. The party, though, had just called to say they were running very late. "I can seat you there for now," she said, "and if they arrive, we'll move you to something else immediately."

Camila desapareció hacia la parte de atrás durante unos minutos. Cuando volvió, explicó que una mesa para cuatro junto a la ventana tenía una reservación para las ocho. Sin embargo, ese grupo acababa de llamar para avisar que llegarían muy tarde. «Puedo sentarlo ahí por ahora», dijo, «y si llegan, lo cambiamos a otro lugar de inmediato».

It wasn't a permanent solution, but it was a real one, and Miguel accepted gratefully. He also asked whether the restaurant could comp a round of drinks, given the mix-up. Camila agreed without hesitation, clearly eager to make things right.

No era una solución permanente, pero era una solución real, y Miguel la aceptó con gratitud. También preguntó si el restaurante podía invitarles una ronda de bebidas, dado el malentendido. Camila aceptó sin dudarlo, claramente ansiosa por arreglar las cosas.

His parents walked in exactly on time, and Miguel met them at the door before they could notice anything unusual. He guided them straight to the window table, already set with water glasses and a small candle.

Halfway through the appetizers, Camila quietly returned to let them know the original party wasn't coming after all. The table was theirs for the rest of the night. Miguel raised his glass to his parents. He decided the story of the missing reservation made for a better dinner conversation than a smooth one ever would have.

A la mitad de los entrantes, Camila volvió discretamente para avisarles que, al final, el grupo original no vendría. La mesa era suya por el resto de la noche. Miguel levantó su copa hacia sus padres. Decidió que la historia de la reservación perdida daba mejor conversación de cena de lo que jamás lo habría dado una noche sin sobresaltos.
