Saoirse booked the flight at two in the morning her time, which was eleven in the morning his — a detail she found herself noting even in the middle of an impulsive decision. Nine months of a nine-hour gap had trained her to translate every moment automatically, whether she wanted to or not. She didn't tell Reuben she was coming. Some part of her, she admitted only to the airport window, wanted to see what his life looked like when it wasn't being performed for a video call. She wanted it unscheduled, unlit for her benefit — exactly as ordinary as it actually was.
She let herself in with the spare key he'd given her a year ago and never asked back. What she found was not the version of his apartment she'd built from months of ten-minute calls squeezed between his work and her sleep. Dishes sat in the sink longer than he'd ever admitted to. A jacket she didn't recognize hung by the door — his sister's, it would turn out, though she didn't know that yet. She stood in the hallway for a full minute, constructing an entirely different, much worse explanation, before he came home and the actual one arrived. Never had the apartment felt less like the place she'd carefully pictured, call after call, for nine months.
He was startled to find her there in a way that read, unmistakably, as something closer to alarm than joy, and that was the moment neither of them managed to recover from gracefully. "You should have told me," he said, before he said anything else, before he'd even set down his bag.
"I wanted to see you not expecting it."
"That's not the same as wanting to see me."
Had she called ahead, the visit would have unfolded exactly the way both of them had silently agreed, for months, that visits were supposed to unfold. There would have been the airport, the running embrace, the carefully cleared weekend. Instead, standing in his kitchen among evidence of a life she'd only ever seen edited, she understood something neither call nor visit had let her understand before. The version of Reuben she loved on video was, in small but real ways, a performance. He gave it for exactly the length of a call before returning to whatever this was underneath it.
They didn't resolve it that night, and neither of them pretended otherwise. What they did instead, sitting on his unmade bed at an hour that was midnight for her and three in the afternoon for him, was talk. It was plain and tired, without either the polish of a scheduled call or the fantasy of a surprise reunion. They talked about whether loving someone across nine hours and one ocean was sustainable, or whether it had simply become a habit neither of them had examined closely enough to end.
Neither of them had an answer by morning. They agreed, at least, to stop pretending the question wasn't there.
