The Channel Swim

By hour nine, Imre's stroke had stopped looking like a stroke and started looking like something closer to flailing.

He had trained for this crossing for two years, mapped every current and feeding window on a spreadsheet he'd half-joked was more detailed than his taxes. Friends had teased him about the spreadsheet for months, certain it was overkill for a single swim. None of that spreadsheet had prepared him for the particular exhaustion of hour nine. His shoulders no longer felt attached to any decision he was making, and the far shore, visible now, refused to get any closer.

Delia, piloting the support boat alongside him, had seen this exact collapse in a dozen other swimmers. She throttled down and leaned over the rail.

"Feed," she called out, and tossed the bottle on its line before he'd even reached the boat.

He drank without really tasting it. "I don't think I can hold this pace."

"You're not holding a pace. You're holding a stroke count. Forty-two a minute, same as hour one. Count with me if you have to."

What Imre needed at that moment was not comfort, and Delia, twenty years into doing this job, seemed to understand that better than he did himself. Had she offered encouragement instead, he suspected he would have stopped within the next ten minutes, hearing kindness as permission to quit.

"Forty-two," she repeated, flat as a metronome. "You've done forty-two for nine hours. You can do it for one more."

He swam. Counting stopped being a decision and started being the only thing left in his head: forty-two strokes a minute, over and over. The shore inched forward in a way he refused to check for another twenty minutes at a stretch.

It was the sand under his knees, not any conscious decision to stop, that finally told him he'd made it. He knelt there for a long moment before standing, arms too heavy to raise in any kind of triumphant gesture. Looking back at the boat, he saw Delia already coiling the feed line, unbothered, as if this happened every day.

"Forty-two," she called across the water, and for the first time in nine hours, Imre laughed.
