Fables: Hercules and the Wagoner, The Kid and the Wolf, The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse, The Fox and the Grapes

A Farmer was driving his wagon along a miry country road after a heavy rain. The horses could hardly drag the load through the deep mud, and at last came to a standstill when one of the wheels sank to the hub in a rut.

एक किसान भारी बारिश के बाद कीचड़ भरी देहाती सड़क पर अपनी गाड़ी हाँक रहा था। घोड़े गहरे कीचड़ में भार खींचने में मुश्किल से सफल हो पा रहे थे, और अंततः तब रुक गए जब एक पहिया एक गड्ढे में धुरी तक धँस गया।

The farmer climbed down from his seat and stood beside the wagon looking at it but without making the least effort to get it out of the rut. All he did was to curse his bad luck and call loudly on Hercules to come to his aid. Then, it is said, Hercules really did appear, saying:

किसान अपनी सीट से नीचे उतरा और गाड़ी के पास खड़ा होकर उसे देखता रहा, पर उसे गड्ढे से बाहर निकालने के लिए ज़रा भी कोशिश नहीं की। उसने बस अपनी बदकिस्मती को कोसा और ज़ोर-ज़ोर से हरक्यूलिस को मदद के लिए पुकारने लगा। तब, ऐसा कहा जाता है, हरक्यूलिस सचमुच प्रकट हुए और बोले,

"Put your shoulder to the wheel, man, and urge on your horses. Do you think you can move the wagon by simply looking at it and whining about it? Hercules will not help unless you make some effort to help yourself."

"अपना कंधा पहिये पर लगाओ, आदमी, और अपने घोड़ों को हाँको। क्या तुम सोचते हो कि सिर्फ देखते रहने और रोना-धोना करने से गाड़ी हिल जाएगी? हरक्यूलिस तभी मदद करेंगे जब तुम खुद अपनी मदद करने का प्रयास करोगे।"

And when the farmer put his shoulder to the wheel and urged on the horses, the wagon moved very readily, and soon the Farmer was riding along in great content and with a good lesson learned.

और जब किसान ने अपना कंधा पहिये पर लगाया और घोड़ों को हाँका, तो गाड़ी बड़ी आसानी से चल पड़ी, और जल्द ही किसान बड़े संतोष के साथ और एक अच्छा सबक सीखकर आगे बढ़ रहा था।

THE KID AND THE WOLF

A frisky young Kid had been left by the herdsman on the thatched roof of a sheep shelter to keep him out of harm's way. The Kid was browsing near the edge of the roof, when he spied a Wolf and began to jeer at him, making faces and abusing him to his heart's content.

एक चंचल छोटी बकरी को चरवाहे ने भेड़ों के बाड़े की फूस की छत पर छोड़ दिया था ताकि वह किसी खतरे से बचा रहे। बकरी का बच्चा छत के किनारे के पास चर रहा था, जब उसने एक भेड़िये को देखा और उसका मज़ाक उड़ाने लगा, मुँह बनाकर और दिल भर कर उसे कोसने लगा।

"I hear you," said the Wolf, "and I haven't the least grudge against you for what you say or do. When you are up there it is the roof that's talking, not you."

THE TOWN MOUSE AND THE COUNTRY MOUSE

शहर का चूहा और गाँव का चूहा

A Town Mouse once visited a relative who lived in the country. For lunch the Country Mouse served wheat stalks, roots, and acorns, with a dash of cold water for drink. The Town Mouse ate very sparingly, nibbling a little of this and a little of that, and by her manner making it very plain that she ate the simple food only to be polite.

एक बार शहर का एक चूहा अपने एक रिश्तेदार से मिलने गया जो गाँव में रहता था। दोपहर के भोजन के लिए गाँव के चूहे ने गेहूँ के डंठल, जड़ें और बलूत के फल परोसे, साथ में पीने के लिए ठंडा पानी। शहर के चूहे ने बहुत कम खाया, इस चीज़ का थोड़ा और उस चीज़ का थोड़ा चखते हुए, और अपने ढंग से यह साफ ज़ाहिर करते हुए कि वह यह साधारण भोजन केवल शिष्टाचारवश खा रही है।

After the meal the friends had a long talk, or rather the Town Mouse talked about her life in the city while the Country Mouse listened. They then went to bed in a cozy nest in the hedgerow and slept in quiet and comfort until morning. In her sleep the Country Mouse dreamed she was a Town Mouse with all the luxuries and delights of city life that her friend had described for her. So the next day when the Town Mouse asked the Country Mouse to go home with her to the city, she gladly said yes.

भोजन के बाद दोनों मित्रों ने लंबी बातचीत की, या यूँ कहें कि शहर की चूहिया अपने शहरी जीवन के बारे में बताती रही जबकि गाँव की चूहिया सुनती रही। फिर वे बाड़ की झाड़ी में एक आरामदायक घोंसले में सो गईं और सुबह तक शांति और आराम से सोती रहीं। अपनी नींद में गाँव की चूहिया ने सपना देखा कि वह एक शहरी चूहिया बन गई है, अपनी सहेली द्वारा बताए गए शहरी जीवन के सभी सुख-विलास के साथ। इसलिए अगले दिन जब शहर की चूहिया ने गाँव की चूहिया से शहर चलने को कहा, तो उसने खुशी-खुशी हाँ कह दिया।

When they reached the mansion in which the Town Mouse lived, they found on the table in the dining room the leavings of a very fine banquet. There were sweetmeats and jellies, pastries, delicious cheeses, indeed, the most tempting foods that a Mouse can imagine.

But just as the Country Mouse was about to nibble a dainty bit of pastry, she heard a Cat mew loudly and scratch at the door. In great fear the Mice scurried to a hiding place, where they lay quite still for a long time, hardly daring to breathe. When at last they ventured back to the feast, the door opened suddenly and in came the servants to clear the table, followed by the House Dog.

The Country Mouse stopped in the Town Mouse's den only long enough to pick up her carpet bag and umbrella.

गाँव की चूहिया शहर की चूहिया के बिल में केवल इतनी देर रुकी कि अपना बैग और छाता उठा सके।

"You may have luxuries and dainties that I have not," she said as she hurried away, "but I prefer my plain food and simple life in the country with the peace and security that go with it."

THE FOX AND THE GRAPES

A Fox one day spied a beautiful bunch of ripe grapes hanging from a vine trained along the branches of a tree. The grapes seemed ready to burst with juice, and the Fox's mouth watered as he gazed longingly at them.

एक दिन एक लोमड़ी ने एक पेड़ की शाखाओं पर लगी बेल से लटके पके अंगूरों का सुंदर गुच्छा देखा। अंगूर रस से भरे फटने को तैयार लग रहे थे, और लोमड़ी का मुँह उन्हें ललचाई नज़रों से देखते हुए पानी-पानी हो गया।

The bunch hung from a high branch, and the Fox had to jump for it. The first time he jumped he missed it by a long way. So he walked off a short distance and took a running leap at it, only to fall short once more. Again and again he tried, but in vain.

गुच्छा एक ऊँची शाखा से लटका हुआ था, और लोमड़ी को उसके लिए छलांग लगानी पड़ी। पहली बार जब उसने छलांग लगाई तो वह उससे बहुत दूर रह गई। इसलिए वह थोड़ी दूर पीछे गई और दौड़कर एक छलांग लगाई, पर फिर भी कम पड़ गई। बार-बार उसने कोशिश की, पर व्यर्थ।

Now he sat down and looked at the grapes in disgust.

अब वह बैठ गई और घृणा से अंगूरों को देखने लगी।

"What a fool I am," he said. "Here I am wearing myself out to get a bunch of sour grapes that are not worth gaping for."

"मैं कितनी मूर्ख हूँ," उसने कहा। "मैं यहाँ खुद को थकाकर खट्टे अंगूरों का एक गुच्छा पाने की कोशिश कर रही हूँ जो देखने लायक भी नहीं हैं।"

And off he walked very, very scornfully.
