The Translation Earpiece

Delphine's company issues everyone a pair of translation earpieces this month. They're small devices that translate speech in real time during international calls. She's skeptical at first, but they've worked well enough in her first few meetings with the Berlin office.

Today's call matters more than usual. Delphine is presenting a proposal to a new client in Seoul. The earpiece is supposed to translate her English into Korean instantly. It's supposed to work so smoothly that the client won't even notice the gap.

Halfway through her presentation, she notices the client's expression shift, somewhere between confused and mildly offended. She keeps talking, assuming it's a connection issue, but the reaction only grows more obvious.

"Why didn't it just translate normally?" Delphine asks, already dreading the answer.

"Office idioms don't always survive translation," Callum says. "The system tries its best. But if you speak in plain, direct sentences, it works a lot better. It's worse when you use expressions like that."

Delphine spends the next hour rewriting her key phrases into simpler language, cutting every idiom she can find. "Flexible" becomes "we can change the price if needed." "Circle back" becomes "contact you again next week."

She emails the client an apology, along with a short, clearly worded summary of the actual proposal. Within an hour, the client replies, relieved, saying the numbers actually sound reasonable once they're explained clearly.
