The Shift Lead

Amara got the promotion to weekend shift lead mostly because she showed up on time, a low bar she had cleared so consistently that her manager stopped considering anyone else for the role.

Amara consiguió el ascenso a líder de turno de fin de semana principalmente porque llegaba puntual, un estándar tan bajo que había cumplido con tanta consistencia que su gerente dejó de considerar a cualquier otra persona para el puesto.

What the promotion actually meant, she discovered within two weeks, was that she now had to discipline the one person on staff who never showed up on time. That person was Thad, her best friend since middle school, who had gotten her the job in the first place.

Had anyone else on staff been twenty minutes late three times in one month, Amara would have written them up without a second thought, exactly as the handbook required. The problem was that Thad was not anyone else, and every rule she enforced on him now came with a cost the handbook had never bothered to mention.

She let it go that Saturday, and immediately regretted it, watching Thad's easy confidence confirm to him that the rule, whatever it technically said, would never actually apply where he was concerned.

She had been so focused on protecting her friendship that she had stopped noticing what protecting it was quietly costing everyone around them.

She wrote Thad up the following Saturday, on the fourth late arrival, and watched his expression shift from confusion to something closer to real hurt.

"Seriously?" he said. "For twenty minutes?"

"For twenty minutes four times," Amara said, "and because I've already let it slide three times for reasons that had nothing to do with the job."

He didn't speak to her for the rest of the shift, and their friendship, over the following weeks, cooled into something more careful than either of them wanted to admit out loud.

What Amara had not expected was how little the promotion itself had prepared her for this particular kind of decision. For the first time, being fair to everyone meant being genuinely unfair to someone she loved.

She never fully resolved whether she had done the right thing by the job or the wrong thing by the friendship, or whether those two questions had ever really been separable to begin with. Thad eventually forgave her, mostly, though something between them stayed, quietly, a little different than before.
